AUSTRO-GERMANY.

"GERMANY'S FIRST SERIOUS DEFEAT." GLUM NEWSPAPER COMMENTS, Received August 13, 7.25 p.m. London, August is. A Berlin semi-official message attributes the latest German defeat to the fact that only hasty defences were possible in the over-run area owing to lade of time and transport for material. The message mentions that a hurricane fire was concentrated oh the trench garrison, breaking down tlie telegraph' Wl telephone communications; also, signal rockets were invisible in tlie thick fog. 'i'lie suddenly found themselves attacked in the flank and rear by squadrons of tanks, whose machine-gunning played terrible havoc. The German newspapers a!re beginning to admit, the Allied success, though professing a calm confidence in the future. The Cologne Gazette says there is no good hiding the fact that this check by an enemy not numericaly superior hits us hard. The Tage Zeituiig, the organ of the pan-Germans, says the first serious defeat of the war is due to state- of the morale of Prince Ruppfeelit's troops. The Vorwaerts, commenting on . the crisis confronting Germany,- say that the morale of the nation has been damaged by the Pan-Germans' tfild cry of "conquest." General von Ardeiuie, in tile Berliner Tageblatt, says that the failure of tlie defence must be admitted. The losses of ground, guns and- prisoners must be painful, as the German High Command is now particularly anxious to economise its forces. The military critic of the Mit Ta'ges Zeitung prepares the public for a further retreat.—Reuter. GERMAN PUBLIC. Amsterdam, August 12. A Stuttgart message says that the N T ens TageHatt h'a«, ptVblished a n official note preparing the German public for a considerable evaluation of territory between the Avre and tlie Somme.—Aus.N.Z.
