-MAGISTRATE'S COURT; C\;r Wyvorn Wilson, S:M., presided over a sitting of the Court held yesterday; BREACHES OF BY-LAWS-Alfred Peatson, was charged with driving a motor car nrcimd-a corner on the wrong side cf the road, at an excessive speed. The speed was estimated by a constable to be a? least 10 miles an hour. Defendant pleaded guilty and in doing bo said that he had only recently purchased a car and was unaccustomed to driving. A line of 10s and Its costs was inflicted on each of two charges. For driving an express without lights at right, William Wright was fined 5s "nd cost 7s. ACTED IN IGNORANCE. A young man named 'Peter Lawson, who claimed "to be a Dane, was proceeded arainst for having failed to register under the Alien's Registration Act, and pleaded guilty. Senion Sergt. Till said the Government Statistician had informed the police that the defendant had failed to register. Defendant said that at the outbreak ef war he had enlisted hut was turned down owing to defective eyesight. He afterwards made application for his naturalisation papers, hut was told that lie could not get them until after the war. After taking the steps which ho !:ad, lie was of the opinion that there was jio occasion for him to register. Tiie Magistrate: You read the newspapers, don't you? Defendant: Certainly, sir, raid I saw f notice re the registration of Aliens, but 1 was still of the belief that I had done ill that was required. The "Magistrate said that there was no question of the man's loyalty, and the breach of the law had bee'.: committed unwittingly. Defendant would be fined 10s and Vs costs. CRUELTY TO A HOUSE. A native named Whetu was charged that oil August sth he did cruelly illtreat a horse by jailing to provide it wit'fi sufficient food and shelter, and did drag it along while suffering from a broken leg. Senior Sergt. Till said defendant, apparently, left the horse on tiie roadside to die. The animal had a broken leg, and its condition was such that when Viewed ry the police ail order was obtained for its destruction. The horse was left ou the road for two days and then defendant had it dragged to his paddock, a dis. wince of 50 yards, while still alive. Defendant had acted in a very callous manner. Defendant said he had instructed a neigllbour to destroy it, as lie had not the heart, to do »n himself, and hp un(iersiood it had. hccA destroyed.
