The ladies hud worked energetically !'or ine day, with the result that when the Mart opened with its extra stalls for plain and fancy work, fruit and produce,, (lowers, and miscellaneous articles, all were heavily stocked, and with the number of ladies in attendance, the Mart presented a, most business-like appearance. All day long the workers pressed their wares npon the passers-oy, and when the takings were totalled at closing time the magnificent sum, of £G4 had been raised, and that without competitions or raffles of any description. The success of Spinsters' Day should constitute a direct challenge to the> bachelors of the district to come to the Bid of the Red Cross Mart.
Tho clear atmosphere of yesterday afternoon mado visibility exceptionallygood. From the vantage points of the: town a very expansive view of the surrounding country was presented. Residents of many years in the district states that rarely is such a view obtainable aa that presented yesterday. On the coast,, tho White Clifl'3 were very conspicuous; In the sunlight, while the outline of tho mainland could be easily traced far away to the north. Egmont, of course, b(oo3 out in its accustomed grace and beauty, broken only by the rugged foothills leading up to it, on the tips 01 which there still lie traces of the recent snowstorms. Away in the distance, clear against a sky, the ethereal blue of which was scarcely broken by so much as a fleck of cloud, could be seen the jagged peaks of giant Puiapehu thickly miowclad and glistening in the brightness of the sunshine. A little to the north, the central, but lesser peak (Ngaunihoe) of the trinity of mounts was also unmistakably visible to the naked eye, across tho green tops of the fir trees in tho foreground of the picture, as seen from the summit of Western Park.
The first of the municipal open-air band recitals for tho coming season was given yesterday afternoon at Moturoa under most favorable conditions, and it seemed as though the sun was smiling its pleasure at the reappearance of'the Citizens' Band after its' recess. The beautiful afternoon attracted | a very large crowd of people. Trams wore kept running at close intervals between Egmont Street and tho breakwater but a number of people from the eastern end of the town had some difficulty in reaching Moturoa. The fact was that tho present is the time for tho overhaul of the tramway rolling stock in preparation for the summer traffic, and some of the cars were in the repair shop, and in consequence the management was not able to run a full service. Rushes of traffic at any time are difficult to deal with, and it must be said that the local authority usually acquits itself creditably at such times. Those who went to the breakwater yesterday were well repaid for the band, which was in full force, played an excellent programme of music, and the items were well received. Included in the numbers played were two quicksteps, "Heroic" (Farrimond) and "Follow the Guards" (Braemar), an arrangement of "The Old Rustic Bridge" (Walton), a march, "For King and Country" (Rimmer), and a new march, "When the Boys Come Home" (arranged by Mr. Laidlaw, of Dunedin). By special request, the number "A Perfect Day" (Jacobs Bond), was played, tho solo being taken by Bandsman Voghfc. In addition two cornet solos were contributed by Bandmaster Mlieod, entitled ''When You Come Home" (Squires) and tho well-known' "II Bacio" (Arditi). The collection, which was stated to be a very good one, was for the band funds.
Locking a girl and a man in the same coll is the fiendish idea of the spy in "The Gilded Cage," in order to increase the dishonor which their imprisonment is bringing to them. However the escape of the little princess is ingeniously worked, and the tables are turned. Alice Brady, Irving Cummings and Montague Love star iii this World film feature, wihjich shows finally at Everybody's to-night.
