BATTLE IN A THUNDERSTORM.
HOW A BRITISH MERCHANTMAN SMASHED A U-PIRATE. During a heavy thunderstorm a London steamship recently had an exciting encounter with a German submarine, and after a three hours' conflict succeeded in escaping, having inflicted serious damage on the U-boat. In the endeavor to zigzag the steamer's steering engine was seriously damaged, necessitating the use of the hand emergency helm, a matter of extreme difficulty in the heavy seas which were running. One shot from the steamer apparently struck the U-boat, and the Germans increased their fire. Continuing to use their gun with some effect, the seventh and eighth shells fired by the British gunners struck the submarine on the starboard bow, causing her to dive rapidly. Ten minutes after she came to the surface disabled, the fore end from the conning tower being under watjr unu the after end high above the surface. Before the Germans could trim the submarine the British vessel made her escape. In ten shots the British gunners made three hits; of 40 shells from the pirate not one hit the steamer.
