Word has teen received of the death of Mr Joseph Blowttfield at" Te Puke. Mr Bloomfield was formerly a resident of Matapu, and was one of the directors of the Mangatoki Dairy Company. A London cablegram states that Mr Joseph Cook, tho Australian politician, lias .been appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order off St. Michael and St.. George (G.CJMG.) A Qhristchurch message states that news has been received there that Lieut, fl. S., Richards, New Zealand Fvhodes schokr, 1914 (the first Canterbury man to attain that honor), has been killed in action. He woili'' ffijpnie in 1916 and passed his examinations at Oxford, after which he joined' the Ess* Regiment. He was wounded in the B&t----tle of the Sosnmc, and spent thirteen «r»riths jn hospital. On recovering he put in a courso of training at an aerodrome, joined the Flying Oorrps, ■and returned to'the front comparatively recently.
