TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.
MEETING AT NEW PLYMOUTH. A _ meeting of the Taranaki Teachers' Institute was held on Saturday morning, when Mrs. Dowling presided over an attendance of 30 teachers. Mr. H. Dempsey read a most interesting paper on "Composition," outlining tho treatment that it should receive. Considerable discussion followed, in which Inspectors Morton and Ballantyno took part, and on the motion of Mrs. Dowling and Mr. C. A. Straek, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Dempsey. Correspondence was received from the board relative to matters brought before it by the institute. The interference of patriotic and other functions with the ordinary school routine was discussed by the meeting. On the motion of Mrs. Dowling and Mr. Stratford, it was resolved to "ask the board to discourage the serious interference with school work .caused by preparing children to take part in these functions."
The secretary proposed 31 new members, whose election brought the total membership of the institute to £-.30, exclusive of 10 teachers on active service.
