ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Eltbam, Aug. 3 Tin; attendance of the public at the meeting held in the town hall on Wednesday \va 3 distinctly good. Mr. G. -A Buokcridgc, president of the EMiani branch of the Protestant Political Association, was in the chair, and briefly introduced the Kev. J Knowlas Smith, who lias be?n in the district the last few days building tip the membership of the association.' The speaker was accorded a very hearty reception and a sympathetic hearing. During the course of his remarks the reverend gentlelnan paid a tribute to the work of the Salvation Army, bis sentiments being endorsed by the audience, judging from the appla-use following his reference to the Army's work. I regret to report that Private C S. Xorris lias been made a prisoner of war. He could not have been at the front any length of time before he participated in a "scrap" with the enemy that has ended in him having his present address in Germany. His 'father, Mr. P. Norris, bas received a letter, but the Huns are taking no chances of information escaping through the ink-bottle, so Charlie's letter is very brief, containing sufficient information to indicate that lie gets three feeds (probably anything but substantial! and plenty of hard work (trust the enemy to pee to that). Young Xorris' letter indicates that there are two other lads from thois district also unwilling slaves of the German empire, these being Privates Terry O'.Keil and Duckworth, the latter enlisting from Mangamingi. A number of C Division (2 children) from this district have interviewed the military service board, and the results indicate that Hie majority of those called up will remain at their present call'mrr. having been classed C'2, borne service Prominent amongst these arc G. B. Martin I jeweller), Nealc (gasfitter), C. Bnrle (borough overseer), P. It. Boyle (factory manager). The Mangamingi farmer, Alex. Boddie, also failed to secure his berth for an oversea trip. Eliliam was represented by D. S. Wallace and Norman Burke in the Taranaki rr.iu'.ngent leaving for 01 camp on Wednc=dnv
