Mr. H. C. Collier, who has been at the CI camp, was discharged last week on account of pleurisy. Mr. A. H. Halcombe, who underwent an.l operation in a private hospital in New Plymouth recently, is making satisfactory progress.

Mr. P. G. Freeth, editor of the Manawatu Daily Times, has been elected a member of t)ie Wanganui Education Board, representing the iPalmerston North urban area.

Word was received in New Plymouth yesterday of the death of Mr. J. T. White, which occurred suddenly at his residence, Devonport, Auckland. The late Mr. White was in business in New Plymouth, afli resided here for many years, going to live at Devonport some 10 years ago .

Mr. J. E, Bropdfoot left Eltham yesterday to take up his now appointment at Feilding.' On Thursday, he was pre-, sentaft by Mr, Orenfell, on behalf of the Past Office staff, with a silver-mounted cigar-case and cigar-holder. Mr. L, A. Bott, of Alexandra, who has been appointed posttpaster in, succession to Mr. Broadfoot, is expected to arrive in three or four weeks' time, and, meanwhile, Mr. JPGregor, of the New Plymoutu office, is acting postmaster. There died at Auckland on the Ist inst. l Mr. John M'Kenzie. formerly of New Plymouth; at the age of GS years. The late }ir. M'Kenzie arrived in New Zealand GO years ago. About 12 years ago he igave up journalistic work, anil entered into business aa a land and estate agent at Auckland, and at the time of lus decease was; senior partner in the firm of M'Kenzie and Buckley, of Auckland.

The death occurred in Wellington of Mr ,lames Slattei-v, manager of the Wellington branch of the Bank of New Zealand. Deceasefl, who was a single man, was 48 years old, having been born in Beefton in ISTO At the age of IS lie e»iered the service of the Bank of New Zealand, and in June, l!Ha, he w&s promoted from the position of accountant in Te Aro branch to that of manager at Wellington South. Death was due to heart failure, .the result of pneumonia. Mr Slatteryhad been feeling ill for some time, but only took to liis bed last Friiav.

A Wellington message states that Mr Samuel Alpc, vetireiT civil servant, died suddenly on Wednesday, aged Si. He was in his usual health at 4.30, and a few minutes later was found lying against a wall dead. The cause was 'ieart disease. In his earlier days he was a keen cricketer, and a fine batsman of the steady order. His name is well remembered on the fields both of Canterbury and Wellington. In a match at Christclmroh against Lilly white's team in 1878, Mr Alpe won the prize for the best fieldsman.

At a meeting of parishioners of the lalte Rev, Falther Dore, held at I'oxton on July 2S, it was unanimously decided that a 9uitaible mamorial be ereoted to his memory, and as it was the laite rev. fathers keen desire, often expressed, to erect a new church in Foxton, the said memorial will take the form of a new church.
