LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A boy named C. Sullivan was admitted to t'lio New Plymouth Hospital last evening from Mount Messenger, with an injured leg. It ia believed the boy bad a fall from a horse, but the extent of the injuries received could not be determined last night. A meeting of all those interested in the erection of a suitable memorial to the lnte Mr. A. H. Ambury, in recognition of his heroic action and tragic dontli on the slopes of Mount Egmont 011 June 3. lias been called by the Mayor of Now Plymouth, and will be held in the Soldiers' Club on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
A food start was made last night at the instruction class for men who are about to enter camp. There was an attendance of between 20 and 30, and the men who showed themselves eager to learn were put through sorno elementary exercises. Ti.o instructor offered to give the men an extra in the week if tliey desire it, 1 it was agreed to attend for drill 0,1 Thursdays and Fridays each week.
On the motion of Mr. Quilliam (Govett and Quilliam), probate of the will of the late Mrs. Margaret Dustow has been granted by the Supreme Court to Mr. Herbert Sampson, the executor therein named.
A special service of intercession will be held in Whitelcy Church to-morrow morning in connection with the fourth anniversary of the declaration of war. In the evening the Rev. W. A. Sinclair's subject will be "Gipsy Smith, and the Religion of Our Soldiers." Messrs J. Toms and Co.. specialists in all kinds of machinery, notify having taken the premises lately occupied by Messrs D. Berry and Co., in Brougham Street, and attention is drawn to their advt. in this isaue.
Candidate Smith, who lias been a member of the Salvation Army, New Plymouth Corps, for years, has, been accepted for oftlcership in the Army work, and will farewell at the Army Hall on Sunday, when the public are invited to attend. The candidate has been appointed to Wanganui. Special hymns and prayers will be offered for' our nation and soldiers.
"Art in Australia," a particularly attractive publication has, been forwarded by Mr. A. S. Brooker, of the "8.K." book depot, New Plymouth. The pictures nnd views included give an excellent idea of the work of Australian painter?, pen-draughtsmen and etchers during (he past quarter of a century, and ilie present is the fourth publication of a series of special numbers devoted entirely to the progress of art in the land of the gum-tree. Most of the pictures belong to private collectors and have iiot been accessible to the public before. To the lover of art, these treasures make a direct appeal, as the pictures are entirely Australian. The usual selection of special matinee films will be serened at the Empire matinee this afternoon, when prominent on the list will be a smashing comedy picture ''Fatty's Seaside Lovers," featuring Fatty Arbuckle. Amongst the other pictures there is one of the best topical gazettes yet seen locally, also a nature study, "African and Indian Elephants,'' a big comedy "Queen for an Hour," and other comedy and dramatic pictures. Carlyle Blac-kwell and Muriel Ostriche are the co-stars in a fine World film feature "Sally in our .Alley," whiell shows at the matinee and night sessions at Everybody's to-day.
