STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left witli Ur H. }. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] COPPER TRAIL. Stratford, August 2. Since the war commenced the members of the P.ed Cross liave done yeoman service in alleviating distress, pain, and anguish in various fields where, unfortunately, all too frequently thcil services we'd needed. This work entails the expenditure of vast sunra rf money, hence the periodical appeals to the public. This year the appeal has taken the form of a copper trail with its friendly rivalry between ..\ticfeland and Wellington. and the northern oitv is at present a good way ahead of the southern. Tnranaki is assisting Wellington, and it. is confidently anticipated that all residents of this prosperous and progressive district will be up and doing on behalf of the Red Cross, thereby indicating to other towns that energetic and patriotic Stratfordians are out to do their best. By a tmited effort success will be achieved, so one and all should put forth | their utmost efforts to make Stratford's contribution one to (be proud of atid an example to ffther districts.

July is now a month of the past, but the cold weather is still with us. Yesterday afternoon a stiff south-westerly buster, with occasional rain and a temperature well down to freezing point did not hold much inducement l'or the half-holiday folk to brave the elements. A few wandered down to the football fields, but the majority found it more comfortable to remain indoors.

Xow that the meeting is over, the writer has heard many expressions of regret that Mr. W. H. Were has lost his seat on the Stratford Dairy Company's directorate. The Toko delegate is a silent man at a public meeting, but that he is a good "grafter" in the company's interests is shown by the regret expressed by his co-directors, men who understand the work and know what is expected. Had Mr. Were been returned and Mr. Dingle retired the writer expected to see Mr. Were fill the chairmanship. Probably after the sting of defeat has been forgotten the Toko man would not mind having the opportunity of a spell, as he has other duties—a county councillor (no sinecure these days), chairman of Toko Patriotic Committee, and the farm has been calling him with the shortage of labor. The Dairy Company is also sustaining a severe loss in the secretary (Mr. . Faster) having successfully passed the medical requirements. He fully merited the high praise bestowed on his work.

To be a successful business man, one must have what the ipublic wants and at | a price that will satisfy the hunger. The success of C, E. James' jewellery warehouse lies in the good value he offers. Purchasers know from experience that goods secured here are all of the highest grade in value and at prices that defy competition. At the present moment there axe 1000 and 1 articles offering in gold, silver, and croekerxTvare that are Selling at pre-war prices.—Advt.
