(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Six H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, wilt recelv• prompt attention,] .. CQFRER TRAIL, ".?;.. ■ Stratford, July 31. Mr. J. W. Boon presided at tile committee meeting held last evening. Those present soon got to work to discuss details- The question of allocation of funds was dealt with at length, and a resolution was carried that all funds collected in the Stratford district shall pass through the local branch of the Red Cross Society. The route selected for competition is to be from Flint Road to Broadway Bridge and Imek to Loan and Mercantile Company, Regan Street, approximately one and. a-ha.lf miles. The trail will commence on August 24, and results will be published from time to time.

A ball will bo beld in the Town Hall early in September. Jn_ October a grand concert, to be followed by a dance, will be held.

Various sub-committees are to be appointed, after the present committee has met the delegates from the dairy companies and discussed the line of action. Badges will be issued almost immediately. Gifts of various kinds are already coming to band, and the organiser (Mr. Rnwej has received gifts of two lambs from Mr. Colson. It should be distinctly understood that the Ladies' Patriotic Committee is at the back of the venture, and when the time for action arrives will not be found lagging. 1 MAHOE SOCIAL.

Unfortunately, the weather was anything but favorable for the farewell social held at Mahoe Hall on Monday evening. The occasion was a farewell tendered to Mr. and Mrs. J. Whittington and Miss Florrio Eeilly. Mr. A. Pryce made the presentation to (Mr. and Mrs. Whittington, the gifts being a silver cake i stand and ease of pipes. In fareweiling the guests, the speaker dealt upon the respect and esteem they are held in, and trusted that their future would be spent under equally pleasant circumstances. The Rev. Blair (Kaponga) and. Mr, A. Anderson added a few words of regret that the district was losing such admirable settlers. The Rev. Mr. Blair then presented Miss Reilly with a set of silver vases from the settlers and a jewel case from the Sunday School scholars. Ho expressed regret that they were losing her services in church matters, also her musical ability. Mr. C. H. Fox officiated at the piano for the dance, Ms playing adding much to the success of the evening. Dancing was kept going till long past the midnight hour, all present thoroughly enjoying the outing. A welcome break was made in the dancing by the recitations by Master Thomas. The strong | oommittee of ladies, ably assisted by Mr. Cumlberworth, treasurer, have every reason to be satisfied with the success of the evening.

CHRISTMAS GOODS FOE SOLDIERS. The Ladies' Patriotic Committee intend shortly despatching goods to reach the soldiers in the trenohes at Christmas time. They hope to despatch 200 parcels, and anyone forwafdiag &s may have a card enclosed in the parcel giving bis or her name. The parcel will contain a few firtielos that will prove very beneficial to the recipient at a time when all the world loves a cheerful giver. It may be mentioned in this connection that the Patriotic Committee is always ready to receive gifts of any description. Small cocoa or mustard tins are welcome-

GENERAL, The scholars of the Tututava 'School have forwarded Mrs. A. W. Budge, treasurer of the Ladies' Patriotic Committee, £1 Gs Gd, collected there on behalf of the Copper Trail. Tututawa's example is being followed by other schools, and results will be made known «3 they come to hand.

Mr. Tom Aylward, local agent of the South British, -informs me that his office held the fire .policy of £3OO on Mr. Richards' premises, Hastio Road, destroyed by fire on Tuesday morning. Bird Road ladies controlled the Patriotic Mart on Saturday, when £MJ 9s 4d was netted, and Mrs. C. W. Howard the tea rooms, which totalled £7 lis 4d, both very satisfactory figures and forming a welcome addition to the patriotic funds.

A good deal of indignation lias been aroused by the action of an alien in this district. He lias a large family, including four strapping sons, two of whom have been in camp and passed fit for active service last October. Another son is just coming of age. The matter may not appear mueh*o some people, but this particular foreigner is making the most of the opportunity of land being on the market to mop up all he can lay hands on for himself and his sons, who are evidently not wanted as soldiers. Besides fanning, this man is earning good money from other sources, and is doing a British tradesman out of some good jobs. There is a possibility that a Patriotic Committee will have the matter ventilated in another direction.
