MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.

APPEALS AT HAWERA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A sitting of the above boaid was held yesterday at Ilawera, before Messrs Cooper (chairman), D. McLaren, and A, 0. Considinc. Corporal Charles Leslie Theobald, who is at present on active- service, applied for three weeks' leave of absence on account of his mother's illness. The application was made in Egypt. Mr. Weir appeared for appellant.—Adjourned to Wellington for further information. In the case of George B. Hill, dairy fanner, Rowan, before the board at its last, sitting, Mr. Weir stated that appellant had been unable to make satisfactory arrangements to secure a sharemilker—one tiiat could take charge of his farm.

Major Cos said there did not appear to be much difficulty in obtaining sharemilkers.

Mr. Weir explained that the farm was on the higher land running up towards the mountain and required constant improvement. It was not a place where share-milkers could be profitably employed.—Adjourned until next sitting of the board.

The case of James White, cheesemaker, Whakamara, adjourned from last sitting, was further considered and again adjourned until next sitting. William Treanor, dairy farmer, Nor'manby, withdrew his appeal, saying he was prepared to go into camp in September. For. his action he received the board's congratulation. Herbert George Rae, farmer, Mangatoki. Mr. Gow said that appellant was managing bis sister's farm at Mangorei, her husband being in camp. —Decision reserved.

Harry Halcroft Rawlinson, farmer, Whangamomona, appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. He said he held an o.r.p. sheep farm comprising 1209 acres, which carried from 900 to 1000 sheep. The only help he received was from two neighbors. He was in partnership with Mr. P. O'Dea. His farm was situated 18 miles from Whangamomona. He was also interested in another place which did not adjoin the farm mentioned. All his supplies hao? to be brought out by pack horses over a bridle track.— Decision reserved. In the case of Charles William Schultzc, dairy farmer, Hawera (Mr. Etherington), Major Cox intimated that the military authorities would not accept appellant owing to alien enemy parentage. —Leave granted indefinitely, without pay. Felix Arthur Schumacher, dairy farmer, Midbirst (Mr. Coleman), was similarly dealt with.

Felbj Hunger, dairy farmer, Toko (Mr. Powell), stated that lie had interviewed a member of the Efficiency Board, Mr. Belcher, who had advised him not to put on share-milkers, but to either sell or lease his farm. His farm consisted of 207 acres and he milked GO cows. His brothers-in-law were too far away to assist him; in fact, they had their hands too full. He advertised in the Daily News for share-inilkers and received 25 applications. Ho replied to most of them. His wife was unable to supervise the farm. The man ho bad helping him left because he could not be guaranteed permanent employment. He would not put on share-milkers unless be could secure proper supervision. He was awaiting the board's decision before making final arrangements.—Decision reserved.

Arthur Haggas, laborer, Kiponga, appealed on the ground that he was in Class D of the reserve. His wife and children, he stated, were living in the Old Country, and he remitted to them on an average £3 10s per week, but had no receipts from tho post office for suras remitted. The chairman remarked that the position was very unsatisfactory. Decision was reserved. The appeal of Hark Reynolds, farmer, Stratford, was withdrawn tind accordingly dismissed. The appeal of Archibald Nield Scott, railway porter, Eltham, on the ground of undue hardship, was granted until the October draft.

The appeal of George Leslie, dairy farmer, Wftverley, was again reviewed, appellant being granted an extension until the October draft.

Tho appeal of James Douglas Fairweather, dairy farmer, Paten, will again come before the board at next sitting, as certain information was not yet in possession of the board. William. .Tames Swiiidelhurst, dairy farmer, Eltham (Mr. O'Dca), was granted leave until the October draft. Arthur Edward MeEwen, carriagei'fouilder, Hawera, stated that bis wife's

health was still unfiitisfaolory, and there had been no improvement since he last appeared before the board.— Adjourned until next sitting to enable a report from Jlr. McDiarmid to be placed before the board.

Charles Frederick West, an employee of the Hawer& County Council* was appealed for by the council,—The case was adjourned until September.
