MILITARY APPEAL BOARD.
SITTING AT NEW PLYMOUTH The No. 1 Wellington Military Service Appeal Board, consisting of Messrs D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. (chairman), W. Perry, and ]>. M'Larcn, sat at New Plymouth yesterday. Major Gov, group commander, represented tlie Defence Department. BOROUGH COUNCIL APPEALThe appeal of .the New Plymouth Borough Council (Mr- J. H. Quilliara), op. bdhali of James Wyatt, oar-shed foreman, in the tramway department, in which evidence was given by Mr. l-\ Black, consulting electrical engineer, Wellington, at the la& sitting of the board, was considered, and the board decided to grant an adjournment sine die, on the usual conditions.
FISHMONGER'S APPEAL. William Henry Smith, fishmonger, New Plymouth (Mr. A. H- a single man, who had been previously classed CI, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. He stated t'liat he managed the business he was in for hi« father, who had a paralysed hand and ,could do nothing hpt wrap up fish when it was •old He liad been in the business for about 16 years. He was tlie only fishourer in New Plymouth, and, as far as he "know, in They lwd a launch, which was worked by a brother of appellant. They also bought fish from otter fishermen at Moturoa.
In reply to Major Cox, appellant stated that they could not dispose of the output of the launch without curing some of the fidh. ■He considered the fishcuring business was an essential one, and should be kept going. He r<Hi)d not get anyone to do his work. It was too monotonous for girls or women to do.
The board pointed out that in countries where the fishing industry. maintained large .populations, practioally all the wrk, after the fish was caught, was done by girls and women-
Appellant said lie had never 'befnaway, and did not know what waa done in other place?.
Evidence was also given by the appellant's father, who stated that lie had been in the fish business for over 20 years. Ho had tried to get iakir to replace hi s son, and had had some very unfortunate experiences witli two or 'three men, and had come to the conclusion that satisfactory labor was not procurable. He said if appellant was taken awav from him lie wtiuld be compelled to close own the business.
The nflwol was dismissed, appellant being given leave till the September CI draft was mobilised.
BOOTMAKER'S APPEAL. H. H. fioodacre, manager of the Egmont Boot and Shoe Company, applied for leave for A. Gibbons, who was the sole pressman and employee in the rough-stuff department, till reservist's t'' a ce could be filled. Men in his place u'cre practically unprocurable in New Zealand to-dav. Pressmen in boot manufacturers' places in Auckland had been exempted.
Mr. Perry: In Wellington the boot manufacturers had stated that thev would not appeal for any of their employees but clickers and managers of departments.
Appellant, eontinuing, said he would net appeal in the present case if he could fill the man's place fo Major Cox: If Gibbons was taken awav, it would mean the closing of the tactory and throwing out of employment about 30 other hands. He did not Know that it would be difficult to replace bis man u#til lie began to make inquiries with that object.
To the chairman: He had tried through the Bootmakers' Union to secure an rcan, but without success. The hearing was adjourned till the September sitting to enable further efforts to be made to fill the re3fcrvi«t'» place.
