TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Tho South Canterbury Hunt dub meeting takes place on Thursday, Sondowu ricked himself at Trentham and will be oft' the scene for a while. Slcight-of-Hand received rough handling on the trio to Ricearton, but has several weeks to get over it. had the "hard word" put on him in this week's ballot, and haa gone into hard training for the Featherston flutter. Master Hamilton, Bore, and Kaupokonui are a likely trio to clean up the Steeplechases at Washdyke on Thursday. Colorado has been showing wretched form during the past few months, but he was heavily poulticed for the Grand National on Wednesday b,st, and the coin came from the right quarter If anyone in Taranaki expressed a doubt as to Volo's ability to win the Winter Cup punters would subscribe him a free ticket (single) for Porirua. And yet 11.5 is an unheard-of weight for a winner in the Ricearton mile. Weight of money has caused Volo to rush down to a low figure in the odds-merchants* charts. Parisian Diamond, John Barleycorn, Lady Louisa, [Bagdad, All Over, and Hydrus are being taken no chances about, so the layers are on a great wicket. Some stunning good horses have failed in the Winter Cup under big weights. In fact, Vladimir and Kremlin, who both stored under 10.12, divide the weightcarrying record for the race, and only four times has a horse won with lOst. or jmore, Of tho 05 horses weighted lor jnext month's race no less than 65 figure under the lOst. mark, and even granting that there is a lot of rubbish engaged, there is plenty of room for a turn-up. AH Over, Hydrus, and Detroit are all well handicapped, r.nd one never knows' when another Parky or another King Star will sail up and grab the prTze. It is no moral for Volo, good one as he undoubtedly is. J It is now definitely decided that Gang Awa' is to be sent south to the Grand ■ National meeting, and the horse is reported to be galloping well, though he has done no jumping since tho Wangaimi meeting. Gang Awa', Sir Fisher, j Art, and Gladful are the shortest priced ones in the big hurdles, and Master Strowan, Waimai, Collector, Coalition, and St. Elmn in the Steeplechase. A glance at the Grand National charts I gives one an idea of the many ways of losing good money, and it is a wonder punters do not 'fall" to the absurdity of trying to pick more than one winner at a time. The business of laying "doubles" and "trebles" must be a wonderful one. If you want to be in a position to wear your Sunday clothes every day in the week, and get Coin without working for it, join up with the Bar Vons. Then all you've got to do is to don a loud check suit, light an Ardath, and let people come and give you Money. It's great!
