STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent) [All communications, Idlers, etc., left •villi Hr H. J. Hopltlns, bookseller, will receive prompt ittentlon.J Stratford, July 23. A glorious day whilst tlie sun was shining, but at sunset th<> temperature is denvn to Arctic. Despite nine hours' sunshine, Monday's snow is still lyiu"thick, and, from indications, will remain so for some time longerWith the exception of Cr. S. B. Hunter, there was a full attendance of members at the special meeting of the Borough Council meeting held last evening. The Mayor presided* and the chief hone of contention was the suggested employment of Mr. Sturrock as consulting engineer. The idea was to pay that gentleman £7uo per annum, and his services were to he available for Hawera, Startford, Eltham, and Inglewood Councils. The idea was well considered, but the opinion generally expressed was that the time was not opportnno to adopt the scheme, and a motion to that effect was eventually carried; also, a motion thanking the Mayor for the attention lie had given to this matter. With tho weather more settled, there is every reason to anticipate a crowded house at the social being held in the Coronation Hall by the Toko Settlers' Association on Thursday evening. The secretary informs me that the trophies von in the field and milking competition conducted by the association will be presented to the successful competitors- A small, but well-balanced, programme of songs, etc., will also be contributed. whilst extra attention has been given to the floor, so that all attending can rely on a pleasant outing. Mre. Campion, of the local Salvation Army Corps, acknowledges receipt of €5 towards the comforts fund raised by the Bird Road scholars. Arrangements are being made for a lecturer to visit Rtratfora shortly to lecture under tho aiv-pices of the Protestant Political Association- The Town I Hall has been let for the occasion, the application having been favorably conI sidered at last night's meeting of the I Borough Council. I There is yet ample time to purchase parlor games now offering at C. E. .Tames' Fancy Warehouse.
