A MILITARY FUNERAL. By Telegraph.—Presa Association. Pahiartua, Last Night. A big military funeral took place today, when the late Private Charles Redd, of Mang'araire, who was wounded at the Somme and had a leg amputated in England, being subsequently in the local hospital for months, was buried. Tho cortege, which was lengthy, included returned soldiers, a firing party, and the town band. Business was closed for an hour, EATING OF GASOMETERS, ETC. Auckland, Last NightA case of considerable interest to municipal authorities, bearing on the question as to whether a gas company is liable for rates in respeot to gasometer, mains and pipes in public streets, was heard in the Supreme Court before Mr. Justice Cooper to-day. The Auckland City Council sought to recover from the Auckland Ga 9 Company £I6BO 13s 8d for rates alleged to he due for the year ended May 31 The facts agreed upon were that, up to May 31, properties, including gasometers and governors, were continuously rated, and the amounts paid by the company. In the valuation in ]DI7, the value of gasometers was ineluded, but the company contended that gasometers, mains and pipes were machinery, and therefore were not rateable. In respect to amounts paid, the company asserted this was due to a mistake of the law. WELLINGTON FARMERS' MEAT COMPANY. Masterton, July 21. The annual report of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company shows an increase in the number of sheep slaughtered compared with the previous year, but a falling-off in lambs and cattle. The balance of the profit and loss account, after providing £5689 7a 6d for depreciation and reserve for income tax, stands at £5428 13s 7d. The directors recommend a dividend of 6 per cent., carrying forward £441 15s lid. It has been decided to erect a further block of buildings for cold storage, to be ready for next season.
