WINTRY WEATHER IN THE SOUTH.

A particularly heavy gait blew last night, and snow commenced early this morning, since when snow and rum alternated, accompanied by a gale of wind. Some interruption has taken place In the telegraph communication withth* North Island, though the West Coast lines are still available. Later. The snowstorm died down lata tali afternoon, and there are indications to» night of another heavy frost, From several portions of lower Canterbury the reports are that the weatiWr conditions appear clear on the ranges, save on the hills seen from AsMmrton; thus, the snowfall would appear to have been almost entirely confined to Christchurch and its neighborhood. If a heavy fall were now registered on the back hills, the consequences would be disastrous, for, in the present condition of the stock, sheep would perish in thousands.
