A TRAP THAT FAILED. MUCH SHOOTING, BUT THIEF' ESCAPES. Received July 18, 1025 p.m. Sydney, July IS. , As a sequel to the motor-car and jewel robbery, the police learned that the thieves would attempt to dispose of the proceeds, and set a trap at certain pawnbrokers' shops. A man appeared; btft evidently recognised the detective, and fired point blank, wounding the detective twice. An exciting chase followed, in which other detectives joined. Fifteen shots were exchanged, but the bus* pect escaped.—Press Association.
