CHILDREN IN PANTOMIMES By Telegraph.—Press Associatioj Wellington, July 17, As a sequel to the reecut production of tiie pantomime "Dick Whittington" in Wellington, several parents appeared at the Magistrate's Court charged with keeping their children from school on the occasion of the matinee on July 3. The truant officer stated that the pantomime management applied for permission to employ a number of children, and the request was granted on. condition, that the children's education was not in« terfered with. The children, however, were kept at the theatre till late at night and asked to attend the afternoon performance. Quo girl, aged eight, was so overcome by the excitement that she had heen in bed ever since. The prose-, rations were brought as a warning to parents. Many children besides those participating had been absent from school to witness the performance. The Magistrate (Mr- Eraser) said that perhaps the parents were not so blameaJ>lp as the management,who took an unfair advantage of the children and of the permits. However, the parents were responsible, and the children had received a reward for acting. The defaulters were fined 2s each. REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE. Wellington, July 17. A statement made by Mr. Myers, Act-ing-Minister of iFinance, shows the revenue for the year ended June to be £20,822,471, as compared with £18£83,172 for 1917, an increase of £2,559,239. The revenue for the quarter euded June, 1918, was £3,603,08fi, as compared with £2,98G,5C5 for the same period of 1917, an increase of £610,249. The expenditure for the quarter ended June, 191S, was £4,053,703, that for the 19'17 quarter being £3,255,912, an increase of £797,793. Thi s is due to additional pensions and the fact that interest and sinking fund charges are growing heavier as new loans are raised. KIELBURNE OOWiCriONIS QUASHED. Wellington, July 17. Mr. Justice Hosking gave judgment upholding the appeals of Marj Griffin and 'Winnie Olsen against convictions under the War Regulations dealing with disorderly houses. He said that both the appellants had regular incomes sufficient for them to live comfortably without seeking money by means of prostitution, and there was no reasonable ground for drawing the inference that uehastity, if it was committed, was practised for hire. The appeal of Mrs. Griffin was, therefore, allowed, Th« Crown did not offer evidenee in 'Miss Olsen's case, and her appeal was also allowed. The Court ordered that, both prisoners should be discharged from, custody. ALLEGED SEDITIOUS PUBLICATION. IN THE GREEN RAY. Dunedin, July 17. At the Police Court to-day, Thomas Padraie Cummins and Albert James OTijan were jointly charged with causing to be published in the newspaper called the Green Hay, a seditious utterance, with the intention to excite disaffection against the Government of tins United Kingdom and encourage the commission of an offence prejudicial to the public safety in respect of the present war, to wit, the crime of treason and levying war against his Majesty. Cummins admitted writing the article, but pleaded not guilty to the charge of sedition. OTlyan pleaded guilty to publishing, but not to sedition. The case was adjourned till next Wed? i nnsday. The article which formed the ' basis of the charge dealt with Ireland. THE WEST COAST MURDERS. IffIWARD ALLOTMENTS. ' Wellington, July 17.
