FIRES.
COUNCIL CHAMBERS DESTROVWD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Carterton, July 1". The Carterton Borough Council Chambers were completely destroyed by fire early (hi* morning. When the outbreak was discovered the fire had a strong hold, and the building was burned to the ground. The contents were consumed, nothing being saved. Maunsell. Wart, and Hogg, solicitors, had offices in the building, and they also lost every.thmg, including a valuable law library. The building, so far as can be ascevtined. was insured for only £.12."), but tlie full insurances will not be available until the strong-room is opened. Maunscll, Hart, and Hogg were covered by an insurance of £"2.'jo. The premises adjoining were the agricultural offices and a dwelling, and th< suffered from fire anil water to the extent of about £-23, which is covered by insurance. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
