PURCHASE OF VICTORIAN WHEAT.
(Special Correspondent.) Wellington, July 16. The Minister of Agriculture, in closing the deal for the purchase of two mil}ion bushels of Victorian wheat, has ha/ to take a certain risk with regard to shipping. It is not certain that he will be able to get all the wheat to this country in the required time. But tha indications are that by a special effort the grain can be moved, and the fact that it is at New Zealand's disposal will have a steadying influence at this end, where the threat of a shortage has been causing much anriety in some quarters. The purchase, the Minister explains, is not intended to discourage in any way the growing of wheat in New Zealand or to weaken the appeals that have been made to farmers on this point. The Government still wishes farmers to grow wheat here, and, of course, the arrangements that have been made to this end will not be interfered with. Thepurchase may be taken as an indication that the inducemenst are not going to be increased- It is stated here that the price paid for the Victorian wheat is in the neighborhood of 5s 8d per bushel f.o.ib.
