THE SUPPLY OF DENTISTS.

DEPUTATION" TO MINISTERS. By Telegraph.--Press Association. ■Wellington, July IS- ■ A tie;iiit;ili(iii waited on Ministers toil;! v will] regard to tlie shortage oi denial students' Mr. Sidcy, M.l'.,'said they siiotild have a regard for the future, and i there .should lie no lowering of the stanj dard to meet the deficiency. As regards j the suggestion tliat there should be a. I dental institution in the whole of the four centres, lie thought sueli a step would ■: be retrograde. The best solution was the offer of bursaries to secure proper training. -.-< .Mr. N. Mitchell, president of the New Zealand Dental Association, said it was estimated that the dental profession should be recruited by 20 students a year. Therefore, it was recommended there should be twenty bursaries allotted each year for a dental school at Dun- | eiin, with the addition of fees and an I extra £3O from students who had to live away from home. In return for . State assistance, it was suggested that on completion of the fourth year's training sudents would enter into an agreement to do dental service for the State I on terms to be arranged. After other speakers had given their views, Sir James Allen said the bursary scheme must go before Cabinet. Jf the Otago School was full, there might be something to be said for the institution or a school in other centres, but at present there was no such need. The Hon. G. TV. Russell said he could not support a policy which would concentrate all the dental training at Dunedin. He suggested it was possible to have the earlier part of the training away from Bunedin. and hoped that as a sequel to Stte bursaries there would be ft system of State dentists for the benefit of all children. The Hons. Messrs Myers and Hanan adoped a sympathetic attitude towards 1 the deputation's suggestions for aid in i keeping up the supply of dentists.
