' MONTHLY MEETING. 'i'ho Eltham County Council wet on Saturday. Present; Crs. J, Belcher (chairman), W. Hardr. tvick Smith, E. A Gilford, C. E. McGulnnesa, A. <;. Pease, A, McWiUiom, W. M.' Barter, &,, Jlcsscna, and A. L, Cumiiboll. ENGINEER'S REPORT. K. D. TosswilJ, engineer, reported on the work dona during the mouth in clearing out, \vatar-table3 and culverts, patching, clearing, away slips, etc. He also stated that soverar new joints had been put Into the MangawheroIti bridge on tho Opunako Road. Levels had, been takou along tho Mangawhero stream from the western koundary of section 53, block X to the Eltham borough boundary, tho fall being 13.08 ft., with a further fall of 12.59 ft. to Castle Street bridge,, making a total fall of 25.G7ft„ the depth of the creek at Castle Street bridge, being 0.60 feet. At tho county depot the wornout tar lieiler had been dismantled and preparations mado for erection of new boiler, gates and tracks had seen repaired, concrete pipe moulds had been cleaned and re-set and the grade fronting the motor shed had been lowered, ito avoid flooding in wet weather. Yard and engines and plant generally had been thoroughly overhauled. A considerable amount of damage was being done to roads in various parts of this county by drivers of vehicles who deliberately drove with one wheel in the -watertable or just off tho edge of tho metal; during weather such as the present the practice was particularly harmful, and the engineer recommended that the bye-law dealing with the same-bo strictly enforced. catAziNS stock; on roads. Albert Burke, junr., applied for permission to graze stock on upper Hunter Road. W. C Hodgson, Rawhitiroa, also requested permission to use the- county road occasionally, as he had, • lost feed through a fire. The chairman stated that the resolution was*' solely to assist contractors and roadmen engaged on ratepayers' work. The letters were recolved, applicants to be Informed that their requests could not hegranted. BOYS' HOME FARM. I The manager of the Sanation Army Boys' [Home desired the council's assistance in theshape of a grant, and, if that was not possible, . a donation from individual members, towards a scheme they wore now lannchlngg. The Army had recently acquired an additional 25 acres, and wished to teach boys dairy farming on modern and approved lines. A. E. Watkins, Hawera, had donated a pedigree Jersey bull,', whilst Mr. C. Gane had given a Jersey heifer. Tho chairman said the intention was to run 14 cows, tho. boys to control the work and keep records of testing. Whilst the council could not give a grant,' ha thought councillors, might assist, and he would contribute £2. Crs. Campbell, MeWllllain, Barker, Messena, Smith, McGuinncss, and Gifford also donated £2, each, whilst Cr. Pease gave fil, havingalready contributed. HASKERA HOSPITAL SITE. Eawera Hospital and Charitable Aid Board Invited, the council's, delegates to a conference to be held at Hawera on 18th inst,, to discuss the proposed purchase of a new hospital siteat £SOOO, £2500 being granted by subsidy from tho Government and £2500 to be subscribed by local bodies, the Eltham county's share being £682; 7s- 4d and Eltham borough £134 4s, 4d. After a little discussion. Cr. Pease was elected a delegate and; a motion was< carried appiov-lng-of' the-new site. GENERAL.. The fiTinirmnn was. elected, to- represent Uio council at a special meeting: convened by the New Plymouth Harbor Board relative to harbor developments. It was decided to approve of the action of the Whangarei County Council to prevent the poorer classes, of land betas offered to returned, soldiers. The council approved of tho step taken by the Hastings Borough Council in urging upon, the Government the necessity of looking into the manufacture and cartage of cement. The State Advances Department notified that the council's application for' £4OOO for forming and metalling Eraser Road, from the end of Rotokaro Road to tho end of tho southern boundary, had been granted.—Received. Mr. R. E. Williams,' Kaponga, was granted renewal of slaughter-house license. The resignation of tho borough ranger was ;accepted. - The county, cierk submitted) a statement showilng tho indebtedness- of lis various ridings asunder: South, £2500-; Mangatoki, £1383; Omona, £5028 8s lOd; Kapnoga, £671 14s; Eltham, £1453. 7s. 4d- ======
