CENTRAL SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held on Tuesday night, Mr. S. G. Smith presiding. The chairman extended a cordial welcome to the new headmaster (Mr. Stratford), who suitably replied. The headmaster reported the average attendance had been 555.4 out of a roll of 02-2 scholars, not including the Vogeltown School, the roll number of which was 52. The resignation* of Miss Campbell and Mr. N. t>ay were reported, both of whom were joining the High School staff. Miss Campbell's place had been filled by MSs Hinton, a second-year pupil teacher. The headmaster submitted some suggestions for the improvement of the school and its surroundings, and a sul-committcc was appointed to consider the same and report to next meeting. The question of laying out the Courtenay Street School grounds also occupied the committee's attention, and a sub-committea was appointed to prepare a scheme for the work. A suggestion was received from the Fitzroy Committee tiiat the three town schoolg should combine to hold musical and elocutionary contests in the Coronation Hall, and a committee was set up to confer with the Fitzroy Committee
