EXCURSION STEAMER DISASTER.
CAPSIZES IS A FOG. New York, July 8. The Illinois River excursion steamer Columbia had 583 passengers and a crew of 20 when she capsized and many perished. In a dense fog the vessel struck a sunken log in the river, and commenced to sink immediately, and then capsized: She was a three-decker, and the excursionists were dancing and singing when tie aoi-idenl. occurred. A panic ensued, and many'women and children were pushed overboard, and many jumped. There was no time to use the lifebelts or boats.
