HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Hawera Couuty Council met on Saturday. Present: ('is. Murdoch (chairman). Linn, I r>ysaght, Winks, Hawkon, Williams and Tarj i ant. [ THE DIPHTHERIA EPIDEMIC. i The Health Department notified seven cases i diphtheria in the county since last nicotM. B. Watt, district health officer, wrote stating that (tie disposal of household drainage throughout the county by cess pits was very unsatisfactory, and ho suggested: (1) That a house to house inspection be made in tiie more congested parts of the county, to ascertain whether any cesspits now in use constituted a menace to the public health; (2) lhat by-laws be made regulating drainage within the confines of the county. He enelosed a set of suggestions for by-laws suitable for the county. The health inspector, A. (fray, reported that there had been 54 cases In the district, the largest number ho had ever to report, 1 made up as follows: Hawera borough 22, county 13, Eltham borough C, county 1, Watmate West 11, Manaia Town Board 1. The epidemic had been going for twelvo months. He thought | school committees could assist in seeing that schools were effectively disinfected and clean- ! ed. Parents should also endeavor to keep the children away from picture theatres, and keep contacts removed from other children. Unless something was done. Hawera would becomo a disease-stricken district. The chairman stated that iu the outlying district 241 premises had been inspected, and the general condition was very satisfactory. He could not, however, understand how the Health Department had allowed the epidemic io reach such a stage. They should inform Die Department what the council had done. The county, according to tho inspector's report, was not, in such a very bad condition. After some discussion, Cr. Winks moved: "That the Department be UTged to assist the district in stamping out the epidemic."—Seconded by Cr. Tarrant. CORRESPONDENCE. Jas. F. Kiley, Okaiawa, was granted renewal of his slaughterhouse license, G. F. Campbell, Secretary of the Treasury, wrote re adjustment of accounts betweeu the Eltham and Hawera counties, that it had been mutually agreed that the Eltham County should pay £450 iu full settlement of all claims, viz.: (1) Mangatokl bridges loan, £260 ; (2) portion of Anderson Road loan, now known as Rawhitiroa Road, £l3O 3s 4d; (3) Mangamingi Road loan, £8 8s; Wingrove Road loan, £25 10s 6d; Hu Road loan, £35 17s 4d.— Received. F. Carrington, chief surveyor, New Plymouth, wrote re Puketi Road deviation.—To be informed that tiie council would take the matter in hand at once. \V. Johnston. Okaiawa, complained of the unsatisfactory state of the road leading to his property.—To be considered when preparing the estimates. HOSPITAL MATTERS. A letter was received from the Hawera Hos-! pital and Charitable Aid Board, inviting delo- | gates to a conference of contributing bodies, to discuss the proposed new hospital, and the 1 raising of £2500, half of the cost of new buildings and grounds. Cr. Linn moved: "That ail the councillors' attend the meeting as delegates."—Seconded by Cr. Tarrant aud carried. FOREMAN'S REPORT. Mr. B. Muggeridgo, county foreman, re--1 ported on work during the month: Tongahoe Valley.—A start will be made next i | week to put a temporary bridge over the Tongaj hoe River. In regard to the Kiritae, the timber : ; that was congested at the mouth, where it was: proposed to put a temporary bridge over, was I jail washed away with tho last flood, leaving! I a clean channel, which would require 50ft. j stringers to bridge it. It would be better to | leave the crossing in abeyance until the Tonga-1 hoe is finished. I I Tongahoe Bridge, Main South Road —This, ! bridge i? now finished. There is still a slight j ; dip in the decking on the up-stream side, but I ; it is quite safe for all ordinary traffic. ] i Tho tramway to the Wuukino beach is pro- , 'pressing satisfactorily, and will shortly be ready i for the laying of the rails.
