PRESENTATION OP SCHOOL SHXEIiDa On Friday, in tie preseace of a i|ige gathering of townspeople, teacher*, and schoolchildren, the handsomeshieldswon in the schools' competition* were preMated to the winners bj hi* Iffjonbip, the MayorMr. 5, R. Corrigan, In the absence of the president, briefly introduced the Mayor.
In making the presentations, the Mayor said it was children's day. and he wished there were none but eflilAwp present. It was a happy thought fco have a special section for the children, who would be the mem and womefc of the future- H« congratulated tbe fl?in« ter Show Executive, and was glad the schools had taken up the matter's? yell. He said he wjis somewhat disappointed that there was not more competition in the farm and garden section, because it was a subject in which the board had taken a lot of interest. They had encouraged the subject by making all schools have gardens, believing thjrt the influence would be for good, and would inculcate a love of gardens, so that in the future the children, when grown up, would have beautiful gardens of their own. He was sure the gardens of South Taranaki compared favorably with any other district. The board wanted to make school inside and out as attractive as possible so that Children would not look on school ag gaol. He thanked the judges for their fort; In the writing there were over 09Q entries, and the work involved could be realised. He congratulated the (Jopora —Messrs Bennett and Sutton, Messrs James and Gillman, and the Hawer% Star, He believed that next year West End, the winners, would have to, work' hard to retain the shields. He heard that there was talk in Wanga#tyi of competing next year- In presenting the shields for ssays and for writer to Mrs. Dowling, principal of the Wertfeni School, Nejv Plymouth, he pQngrati&ated Iver heartily, and hoped she wnild her best to retain them. 'He the shield for fara and garden work to Mr. Innes, headmaster of the Okaiawa; School, and hoped that next yea* would bo more competition.
