PRODUCTION MUST BE MAINTAINED.
TO MAINTAIN COUNTRY'S FINANCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 4. Sir James Allen said to-day that the Government was of opinion that it was absolutely essential that production should be maintained as nearly as possible at the present standard, in order to safeguard the finance of the Dominion. A3 a necessary coroljary, the Government recommended that the last man should be retained on each farm, provided the Military Service Board considered his retention essential, and provided that neither by subivision of farms nor by other means shall there 'be evasion. As to wheat-growing, the Military Service Boards have been advised particularly to consider the exemption of teamster g and grant sine die leave if satisfied that such men will be used for wheat growing, imposing at the same time the condition that these reservists must engage in wheat production while so exempted. The Ministerial re-state-ment is made because the policy of the Government is not clearly understood in all portions of the Dominion.
