Natives employed at the Fcrreira and Ferrcira Deep mines at Johannesburg, numbering 3500, have struck, and are demanding a shilling a day extra. Measures have been taken to guard the public buildings.
Pretoria, July 1. There aro rumors of unrest among the whites in the eastern Transvaal mines. Men are even mentioned who arc willing to lead commandoes on Pretoria. The unrest among the Rand natives is believed to have been fomented by I.W.W. agencies.
(Prior to the strike, General Botha made a strong appeal to them to remain quiet, promising immediate consideration of their grievances and to meet their leaders, who urged them not to strike.
There are 50,000 to 00,000 natives whom the trouble may affect. A ballot of Rand engineers, by an overwhelming majority, favored affiliation with the Federated Trades.
Received July 2, 8.20 p.m. Johannesburg, July 1. Police and troops with feed bayonets entered the native compounds and secured possession of a large number of sticks and other weapons usually kept handy in the event of tribal affrays. They arrested seventy-one of the ringleaders. The natives submitted quietly, and it is expected the majority will abandon their attitude of passive resistance and resume work. Apparently the movement for a general strike of the natives has failed.—Reuter.
