ELTHAM.
(From Our Onw Correspondent.) A lecture on "Tile Army and Navy" wa s delivered in the Town Hall last evening by Air. Treadwell, of Wang anui, and under the auspices of the Eltharn branch of the Overseas Club. The Mayor (Mr 1. B. Crump) presided over a very satis factory attendance of the public. Mr Treadwell was accorded a vers cordial reception and had a very sympathetic hearing, being frequently applauded. He gave m detail nuujy stirring incidents of the past that had demonstrated to the world the bulldog grit of Briton's sons on land and sea. The Rev. Papapkura was i» good voice, and his fine vocal items wexe important factors in the sueCess of the evening. The Eltham .branch of the. Farmers' Co-operative Society intend holding a v-cial in aid of some patriotic funds towards the end of the present month. The branch manager (Mr Judd) informs me that efforts are now being made to ensure that the function will he one of the big successes of the year as iar as Eltham is concerned. Particulars of date, etc., will be duly advertised. The popularity of Mr. William Harvey, chief clerk at the railway station, who leaves to-morrow for Hawcra, was demonstrated this evening, when he was the recipient of two presentations at the C.E. Men's Society's rooms. Mr. G. W> Bennett, station-master, on behalf of the railway officials and carriers, presented Mr. Harvey with a travelling rug and pocket wallet, at the same time expressing appreciation of Mr. Harvey's services as an official, and also to the travelling public, and hoped that in the years to come he would always have pleasant recollections of his 7J pears' stay in Eitham. iMr. T. 0. Stanners made the second presentation (jr. behalf of the C.E.M.S., and mentioned the regret all had in losing such an enthusias. tic worker. Mr. Harvey had accomplished a considerable amount of work as secretary of the society and also on the committee. Whilst regretting they were losing a capable man. it was pleasing to know that the move meant promotion. Mr. Harvey suitably acknowledged the gifts and expressions of goodwill for his future-
