STRATFORD.
(from Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] Stratfrod, June 29. A. AND' P- ASSOCIATION. Mr. J. W. Boon presided at the annual meeting of the StratfoTd A. and' P. Association, held this afternoon. There was a very fair attendance of members.
In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president stated that there was every reason to be well satisfied with the results of the last show. Entries for cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, and home industries had increased. The entries for cattle, 454, constituted a record for Taranaki, the pens being overflowing In introducing the one-dav butter-fat competition, the committee anticipated a fair amount of trouble, whereas it had provided a very popular contest, drawing 33 entries, and the corwa were milked in the owner's own sheds, the ten winning cows being exhibited. The juvenile judging secured 10 competitors, and, as was the case the previous year, attracted considerable attention, and was especially interesting. The catering last year was carried out by the ladies, and proved an undoubted success, showing a profit of £ll6, which must be conceded Iby all as being a decided euccees. They had taken £SiQ9 t against which they had given complimentary breakfa*t tickets £5 9s and luncheon £J4B. During the year improvements had been made to the grounds, two horse-boxes had been hired, water bid on in four extra paddocks, two kauri troughs made; labor had been given. A small tooto had been put on the kitchen, and alterations made to the paddocks.. Lite amusement tax had lifted £lB 15s Sd from their funds- In company with other associations, they had made representations to the Government, and the tax had been withdrawn, but so far the association had received no refund. The concert held at the ghow grounds last winter had cleared £2O Us ®d, but the concert held recently (credit £45) was not included in the balance sheet. In 1017 the bal-ance-sheet showed liabilities:—Huggett Estate £fflo, bank overdraft £2IBO 0s lid, sundry creditors £IOB 6s Id, new luncheon room £236, law costs raising and releasing loans £59 13s; total, £2164. The total lialbilities and commitments were:—Loan £2OOO, cheques immhed and bank overdraft .CMC 2s 7d, sundry creditors £3 19s 3d; total, •£2930 2s 3d. The year had disclosed a gross profit of £237 4s l'ld, less depredation and extraordinary law costs, and a net profit of £46 0s lid carried forward. In conclusion, he formally moved
the adoption of the report and balancesheet.—Seconded by Mr. Marfell. Mr. C. Jtttaon asked if the £230 cost of hew luncheon rooms had been met with receipts from the years workingMr. Boon: It has heen paid out of tho bank, bat was really from the profits of the show. Mr. Marfell said he would hare liked
to see the subscriptions more in keeping with previous years. (He assumed they had 800 members and should have reached more.
Mr. Boon said it should bo remembered that perhaps 100 or wore of the members weTe at the front They wore kept on the books, but the association was not receiving £1 Is for these men. He thought that some of the members who were not going away might throw in a guinea to help the finances. Personally, he would giv« £5 for this purpose. (Applause.) Mr. Lyford: Well, I've a son at the
front. IH pay an extra guinea. Others whs generously stated they would giva an additional £1 Is were Messrs C. Jackson, R. Dingle, T Perry, E. Marfell, Tippins, James, Belcher, Ranford Bros.. W. Pollard, Pavnter, H. N Silk iiml D. o'Sullivan. Mr. Marfell said that the donations were below the past years, and he thought they might improve on things. Later on it was pointed out that the donations received were well up to £230, as against £328 for the previous year. Mr. Perry said last year they had a big discussion on the printing and advertising. He wanted to know what reduction had been made.
The chairman said that the advertising committee had done good work. They had saved about £ll on the previous year.
Mr. Perry flaid he was pleased the work of the ladies in catering had beet* recognised. He had been to many shows, but he never sat down to such a generous spread and good attention as what he received at Stratford. The following office-bearers were elected:—President, Mr. J. W. Boon (reelected); vice-presidents, Captain Hine, M.P., and Mr. R. Dingle (re-elected); treasurer, Mr. R. Masters (re-elected); auditor, Mr. H. J. Thompson re-elected); committee, Messrs B. Orr, H. Stewart, and Paynter; hon. veterinary surgeon, Mr. E Mason (re-elected) Mr. Boon said at first he did not desire another term of office, but he found that the farmers were very busy, and he yielded to the wishes of others. His term of office had bein very pleasant, but this had been brought about by the loyalty of his committee. Some had gone to Palmerston North and others to Wanganui, paying {heir own expenses, whilst time meant something these days. All had been loyal to him, including many whose names were rarely mentioned. (Mr J. Thomas: The good old rank anij file.) He thanked them for re-electing him as president, and trusted the next show would be equal to the last.
The motion by Mr. 800n —"That a Spring Show ho hold"—was seconded hv Mr. Linnell and carried.
The meeting then adjourned.

On Tuesday evening a farewell social will he tendered Privates Hancock and Robson at the Tuna Schoolroom, commencing at 8 o'clock. All those Who intend to be present, may count on spending an enjoyable evening, a fine programme of musical and vocal items being arranged. Times may be hard with many, but their trouble is that they fail to purchase where the cash obtains the most value. The secret of C. E. James' jewellery and fanev goods store lies in the good value he offerß with every article, and it is no surprise that as each year swings by his circle of customers is ever widening.
