Wellington, Last Night. i The-Council of Education carried "the I following motions:— That, in the opinion of thiaewnnil it would be in the interests of efficiency and economy for the Education Department to undertake tho supply of stationery requisites for-use in the pwbKo schools. That the position of the Director of Education or General Superintendent of Education should be the most responsible and most highly-paid in the education service. He should be regarded as the head of the teaching profession. He should be selected from the most highly-qualified education students and thinkers, and, in order to attract qualified men, the salary should be not less than, say, £ISOO per year.
That more use should be made in the schools of some extern of self-go/wrn-znent, with a view .to affording concrete illustrations at fundamental facts of social problems in the daily intercourse of members of the school commonwealth,and that, to this end, a suggested scheme of self-government suitable for use in schools should be prepared and circulated amongst the schools, but that its adoption, in whole or part, and with or without modification, should be optional, and that in cases where it is adopted teachers should be asked to report as to the results. ,' That emphasis drould be laid on utilising literature as on instrument of moral culture.
That the history course should be reviewed with a view to using it so as to attain a more effective realisation of how the »■ I'tions of to-day have evolved.
