A. Betts, G. W balding, S° D. Cameron, H. E. Ellis, J. Isgar, M. James, H. J. Marcha n t, R. L. Jfeaf, A. H. Trotter, H. G. Plews, and E. Hignett: Midhirsrfcmen: A; Jonos and A. G. Kaspar. The Ladies' Committee presented holdallg to the soldiers The Town Band, under Conductor Spurdle, played several enjoyable selections, whilst Mr. Joe Wade delighted Scotsmen with some fine marches, etc. The remarks made by Mr. Hawkins concerning the liquor trade and elections have not .been allowed to go unchallened. At a meeting of the whole of the licensed trade, held at Stratford on June 18, the following resolution was passed:—"That the licensed .trade of Stratford most emphatically against the unwarrantable and untrue statement made by Mr. TV H. Hawkins in the Town Hall, Stratford, on June 13. to the effect that the Stratford Municipal Band is, or was, under the thumb of The Trade in Stratford. Further, Mr. Hawkins' action in not retracting the statnient, when proved to be untrue, brands him as a person who cannot be relied upon in the matter of public statements made by him " Mr. W P Kirkwood, chairman of the Taranaki War Relief Association, left for Christchurch this morning, where he will take part in the deliberations of the Advisory Board Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Brewer and Miss M. Brewer also left by she same train for Takapau, Hawke's pay, their future home. Those who have notified their intention of assisting at the Catholic social in the Town Hall to-morrow (Thursday) evening include Mrs. Massey, Misses Milner, Sheahan, Kennedy, and O'Neill, and Messrs Walters, Rowe. Wilson, Lonergan, and Foley, sufficient talent to provide a first-class concert, apart from the dance. With a break in the weather, a successful function should result. Wet weather militated against the attendance of the public at the dance held at Toko last evenihg. Failure to make use of the Daily News' column was also another cause Still, those who attended thoroughly enjoyed the evening, which was held in aid of the funds of the Returned Soldiers' Association. A vocal item by Miss B. Sheahr;i was much appreciated. Mrs. Bianchi supplied the dance music, which .was of high-grade quality. Messrs Neilson and Cramer were M.'sC. By judicious advertising, the association would have their dances brought more prominently before the public, as thf fullest publicity must he given to secure a measure of success. The eyes of the world are centred on the great German offensive, but the eyes of the thrifty wife are focussed on the good goods at small prices being offered by Mr. C- E. James.
