THE PLIGHT OF THE COUNTRY WOMAN.

To the Editor. Sir,—Docs the quaint fact of an old person of sixty years milking a number of cows that would permanently injure the health of the majority of young women prove that any person may do so? Goitre, rheumatism, wreck of nervous system and general debility often affect the young lady so employed, for her whole after life. Many such a girl marries, but to be a sickly mate and the mother of weakly children, sufferinsr from all the modern complaints, such as adenoids. Strong women of sixty are not uncommon, but may not the plea of her younger sister be genuine when she affirms that the work would be too much for her? Is every such woman to be insulted as a shirker who perhaps has already undermined her health by undertaking too heavy liabilities? Let me also add that women in the country are in r "r?at many instances underfed and uiii 'othed in their efforts t-> secure a home. Why is the farmer's wife go brought before public notice when in newly every instance soldiers' wives in towns will be able to talk over tlie garden fence, while her sister in the country is holding the land from foreigners? Often, she is in almoM solitary confinement like a refractor\ person in prison.—l am, etc., FREE COUNTRY. Tataraiamaka, 12th June.
