Private C- H, Peacock (Eltham) is' reported as removed from the seriously ill list, in the latest hospital report. Mr. Noel Foo&es, of the New Plymouth office of the Union Steam Ship Company, has joined the steamer Pateena as purser. Captain W. Glen, M.C, Royal Field ArtiHery, fetter known to the public of New Zealand as a member of the All Black team, has been severely gassed, and is in hospital in England. Mr. Newton King leaves for Wellington this morning to attend a conference of harbor boards, returning in" time to attend the board's monthly meeting on Friday. y A London cable states that Barry, the sculler, had a narrow escape fromdrowning at Barnes on Friday afternoon. He had recently been wounded and sent to hospital- He was seized with cramp while rowing in a skiff, which capsized, but, fortunately, the mishap was observed by a boatman, who rowed out and saved, Barry. A civic recaption was accorded at Wellington on Saturday to Lieutenant S. FricMetoc, V.C. (Westland). The proceeedings were most enthusiastic. The concert ehamlber in the Tow n Hall was crowded, and a large number were unable to obtain admittance. The speakers were the Mayor, the Hon. Sir James Allen, the Hons. G. W. Bussell and W. D. S. MicDonald, and Colonel J. G. Hugh.—Press Assoc. The death occurred suddenly on Saturday of Mrs. S. Doughty, wife of Mr. W. M. Namby Douglity. The late Mrs. Doughty had resided in Stratford for many years, and was well known and highly esteemed throughout the district. In addition tp her is at present in indifferent health, she is survived by three sons—Messrs W. Doughty (Wanganui), F. Doughty (New Plymouth), and J. Dougfaty—and four daughters—MeEdames Hughes (Nelson), S. Ward, H. Ashton, and Bert Kivell. A fourth son, Kalph, was killed in action. Mr. Christopher Smith, of Wellington, has received news that his son Aubrey has been awarded the Italian Decoration Valorea Militaris, corresponding to the British Victoria Cross. He has also been made a member of the British Empire Order. Smith left three years ago, and after a few months in France, went to Italy and has served as a volunteer transport officer ever since. The action for which the decoration was bestowed was performed a year ago, but its nature is not yet known.—Press Association. . It is with sorrow, and yet with pride, that I am privileged to record (says the Nonnanby correspondent of the Ha•ivera Star) the award of the Military Medal to a gallant Nonnanby "boy, the late Lance-Corporal E. 0. Johnston, and his friends in the district can readily understand that where pluck and endurance were required "Ned" would not be found. wanting. His relatives, too, must bp proud of their hero especially the aged father, Mr. Cosslett Johnston, known throughout the district as the man who saved Turuturu-Mokai. The example set by the father on that memorable occasion has been worthily followed by the Bon.
