The Pembroke Road schoolhouse was crowded last night, when a welcome home was tendered Private W. Petrie by the Pembroke Road Patriotic C'oo'iimittee. During the evening the chairman (Mr. H- Harrison) presented the returning soldier with an address congratulating him on his return and trusting he would soon tie restored to his usual good health. Songs, etc., were contributed by Mesdaines Rogers, Martin, and Dingle, and much appreciated by all. Music for the dance was supplied by Miss Harrison (piano) ani Messrs H. Harrison (violia) and S. Parker (cornet). Extras were given by Mesdaines Rogers M'Craeken, Miss Oliva Martin, and Mr. Belcher. The duties of M.C. were capaibly carried out by Mr. L. Rogers. The floor was in excellent order for dancing, whilst the supper provided by the ladies was relished by all. The card tournament was advanced a further stage last night, when Ngaere scored a narrow win against Te Popo by two games. Detailed scores (Ngaere mentioned first): —P- Burkett and B.

There was a good attendance of dancers at the Foresters' Hall last night when a dance, under control of the Protestant Political Association, was held The floor was in fin® order, and thr music by Mr. C. H. Fox all one coulu desire. A very pleasing extra was contributed by Mr. J. H. Thompson. Tho duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr. A. Nelson. The eyes of the world are centred on the great German offensive, but the eyes of the thrifty wife are focussed on the good goods at small prices being offered by Mr. C E. James. His premises are replete with the useful and ornamental. Goldware, silverware, copperware, and crockeryware are to be foupd on the shelves and in packages. Mr. Man is also catered for, and he can smoke the fragrant weed, carry a walking-stick, and in his pocket/choice reading matter, all procured at lowest prices from C. E. James.
