TOKO SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION. The returns from tho annual competitions provided by tho members of the Toko Settlers' Association are eminently satisfactory, and show what can "be done when farmers combine in friendly rivalry to ascertain the best fertilisers, seed, and cattle required lor the district. The results are: !
CARROT COMPETITION. C. Lofroth, White Belgian, land ploughed in September; nature of land, after soft turnips; sown October 29, 1917, 2lbs of seed to acre, 14in. wide drills. Fertiliser used, 2cwt Ephos and lewt. super; weight of roots to the acre, 37.2 tons; cultivation 81 points, quality 7, points scored, 89 .... 1 R. Richards, Sinclair Champion, ploughed September; land new; on Nov. 2, 1917; 2ibs seed to acre, drill and fertiliser same as Lofroth; wight of Toots to the acre, 31 tons; points, 6, 7, 75 2 M. Gernhoefer, Cooper's Matchless White; September; old lea; October 29, 1917; 21bs seed to acre; drills, 21 and 28 inches; 4cwt Ephos, super and bone; 28.5 tons; 7* 7, 70% 3 C. Lofroth's flrst crop as a nice oven crop. Richards had a splendid strike, but wanted more thinning. Gernhoefer's cultivation and thinning was rather too late. Lofroth's roots. No. 4 position, showed roots small and not sufficiently thinned. SWEDES. M. Lucena, GaTton's Superlative; November; new land; December 15, 1917, l4oz, every coulter; 3cwt Sterling and lewt slag; 33.8 tons; 5, 7, BS%. Some splendid roots, but thin in places. A. R. Teates, Carton's Superlative; November; after green oats; December 18, 1917, 12oz; every coulter; 2cwt. Sterling; 35 16 tous; 6, 7, 84%. Good strike; roots a bit small; wanted more manure. W. H.
