DOMINION'S PART.

WELL MEANT BUT ILL-TIMED. Wellington, June 12. A publio meeting, which was sparsely attended, was held last night to consider raising funds as a national tribute to the valor and sacrifices of the ■French nation. The Mayor, who presided, read a letter from the Acting-Prime Minister stating that Xew Zealand had already established a hospital for rep-atries in Franco and doubting the wisdom of attempting to raise further funds just now. The Minister of Internal Affairs had intimated that he was against the scheme. Speeches were made strongly condemning the attitude of the Government, and a committee was set up to proceed with the project and wait on the Government to ascertain the reason- for and meaning of the ActingPrime Minister's letter.
