ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Eltham, June 10 A well-known ex-Elthainitc Charlie Robinson, now in camp, distinguished himself in athletics at Wellington recently Previously, the honors went to a commissioned officer in long and high jumping. Charlie was persuaded to "try his luck," and soon demonstrated Sis ability, to the delight of his comrades, eventually winning rather easily. He was probaibiy one oi the besttrained footlballers who ever represented the Eltham Club. At the meeting of the Eltham County Council on Saturday, the county ranger related some of his experiences. He stated that to thoroughly carry out his duties it was necessary to move round at midnight, so as to catch the stock. He did not know if any councillors had had any experience in driving cattle at night, but, although it was not an easy task in daylight, it was very bad business at night. He had to give offenders a caution, so it sometimes happened that, although he had been out half the night, he had no results, and "one has to pay for his feed, 2a, so I'm often out of pocket," explained the ranger "The worst of it is," he continued, "many are old offenders and get to know my movements, and act accordingly." The council was sympathetic, but could do nothing. On certain specified roads, li-. censes to graze stock will be permitted, so the ranger will shun these localities! knowing there will <be no business in that direction for him The Druids are expecting a contingent of the brethren from Stratford and Hawera at their half-yearly meeting this week.
