LICENSING COMMITTEES.

TARANAKI ANNUAL MEETING. Hie annual meeting of the Taranaki Licensing Committee was held at the courthouse, New Plymouth, yesterday, Mr. A- Crooke, S.'AI., presiding. There were also present on the bench; Messrs D. H. M'Donald, J B. Connett, IV. Ambury, and F. I'. Corkill. The following licenses were renewed: —E. M'Ginty, Urosvenor Hotel, New Plymouth; H. J. S. 'Brookman (Mr Quilliam), White Hart Hotel, New Plymouth E. Whittle (Mr. Quilliam), Red House Hotel, New Plymouth; S- Ridgley {Mr. Fitzherbert), Terminus Hotel, New Plymouth; T Knowles (H R. Billing), Breakwater Hotel, New Plymouth; W. G. Emeny (H. R. Billing), Royal Hotel, New Plymouth: .1. M'Kean (H. R. Billing), Criterion Hotel, New Plymouth. An application for the transfer of the license of the Inglewood Hotel from A. Lamg to Tom New (Mr. A. H. Johnstone) was withdrawn on the latter's application; also, the application for a new license in the name of Tom New in respect to the same hotel, and A. Laing (Mr. Quilliam) was granted a renewal of his license A. Sansom (Mr. Quilliam) was granted a renewal of his accommodation license in respect to the Okato Hotel, and E. O. Meredith (<Mr A.H.Johnstone) in respect ito tlie Oakura Hotel. A. Goldwater was granted a renewal of his wholesale license, and the Northern Steamship Company was granted a padket license in respect to tho s.s Rarawa. Mr. Quilliam appeared in support of both applications. James Hawkins (Mr. FitzherlbAt, instructed by Mr. G. Grey) was granted a new license in respect to the Imperial Hotel, New Plymouth. The application of F C Heel (ivi_ Quilliam) for a new license in respect to the Railway Hotel, Inglewood, was adjourned for a month for a report to Ibe furnished by the police as to certain repairs reported to be necessary. The committee agreed to an "application for prmission to extinguish the outside lights of hotels at six o'clock. TAUMARUNTJI MEETING. The annual meeting of the Taumarunui Licensing Committee was held at Waitara on Wednesday, Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., presiding. Renewals were granted in the case o£ the three Waitara hotels. A transfer of the license of the Urenui Hotel was granted from H. Ellis to f. W Thomas. Permission was given to licensees to extinguished outside lights at 6 p.m.

STRATFORD LICENSING COMMITTEE The annual meeting of the Licensing Committee was held at the court house at noon. Present: Messrs W R- Haselden, S.M. (chairman), J. B. Richards, C. D. Sole, W. M'Cutchan, J. Morrison, and W Hathaway Sergeant Dale represented the police The following applications for renewals were granted:—Commercial, Mr. Plietan (Mr King); Empire, Mr. Arden (Mr Spence); County, Mr. Kirkwood (Mr Ooleman), Whangamomona Hotel, Mr Rothery (Mr Spence); Mount Egmont, Midhirst, Mrs Enwright; Toko Hotel, Mr. Parkinson (Mr. Spence) A transfer of the Club Hotel, Stratford, from T. .Sullivan to F. J Foley (Mr. King) was granted, as also was a wholesale license to Mr. D. J. Malone (Mr. King) With regard to the renewal of the Stratford Hotel;, Mh. Whittle (Mr King), the police said there was one case brought against the licensee, but it had heen dismissed. Since then the place had been better conducted—Application granted Mr Spence applied for a transfer of the license of the Tariki litotel from Mr. Mehany to Mr- J. O'Malley. The police said they would have to oppose the transfer, although O'Malley was conducting the hotel. There was a charge pending against the licensee to be heard at Inglewood shortly—Transfer hel< over till next quarterly sitting. The SM- intimated that the legislation had considerably increased the powers of the licensing committees under the War Regulations. It "behoved licensees to keep a much stricter control over their premises, as the committee were there to do their duty.
