WANGANOT NOTES. (By "Moturoa.") It would be hard to imagine a worse day for racing than was experienced at Wanganui on Saturday, but- the crowd rolled up bravely and defied the elements, and the sport served up was well worth the inconvenience. Heavy rain set in before the first race, and at times a perfect deluge cleared the lawns of people, the ladies crowding the stand and the gents cramming the bar. (It is recorded that many good sports stayed in the lastnamed place all day!) The racing track stood the test very well, but the front lawn was a mass of duck ponds, and a river of muddy water swept round the tote house. Prior to the Empire Handicap the rain came down in bucketfuls, aid the tote lost much revenue in consequence, hundreds delaying making their investments until too late. It was on this account that Volo was allowed to pay a false price. It is hard to damp the spirits of the sporting folk, however, the "gates" showing a big increase and the tote turnover for the two days beating last year's figures by over £17,000. Fortunately, the racing was got off without an accident. First day's form panned out very well, Rawakore, Glucian, Master Strowftn, 'Pursefiller, and Volo again showing fine form. Volo proved himself the prince of mudlarks by easily annexing the big flat race each day, and in spite of a rise of 121b won easier on Saturday than he did on the first day. It is a good thing for the crowd engaged in the Raukawa Clip at Otaki that Volo's owner missed his acceptance. Rawakore again filled second place in the open sprint, and his prospects at Otaki look very promising. Master Strowan made short work of the opposition in the Grandstand Steeples, carrying his 12.6 like a champion. R. McSevenev was not able to do the brown gelding justice in the Wanganui Steeples, which accounted for his narrow defeat by Braebivrn, but lie was "right there" on Saturday, and rode a pretty race. Pursefiller proved that a mile and three-quarters was her best distance by taking off the May Hurdles, but her rider (McKinnon) took a risk in crossing Kauri King in nearing the last fence. Pursefiller's army of backers had to undergo the suspense of a protest, but, fortunately for them, the stewards decided that the interference did not alter the result of the race. The most noticeable feature of the racing was the vastly improved form shown by Gang Awa', who won the Hack Hurdles in hollow fashion. He fenced as cleverly as on the first day, and, for a change, did not lose ground between the hurdles. For a horse of lis pace Gang Awa's first day's performance was hard to understand, and the problem «H made harder by hit Saturday's
showing. If, could not liave been the distance tiiat troubled him, as he bolted in on Saturday, and galloped round to the sis furlongs post before he could be pulled up. In Master Strowan and Gang Awa' Mr. F. Easton has a lovely National "double." Mr. Alf. Symes got hia first win in with Hyginas when the Hymettus gelding won the Winter Oats from end to end, paying a handsome price to boot. Rawakore and Movement had a good tussle for second money, with Lady General and Depredation close up. ■ Depredation is coming along nicely, and will not be long now. The favorite, Lady Black, had every chance, but she appears to have lost all form. Auckland's only win at the meeting was recorded when F. Johnson pushed Glucian home in front of Paddington Green in the Balgownie Hack Handicap. Winning Shot, Sardinia, and Paddington Green were hailed as winners at various parts of the race, And when they had run themselves to a standstill Glucian came along with a well-timed run and took the prize. Lord Nelson was in the rear all the way. pace was on all the way in the big steeples, Arlington, Marton, and Bote taking turns in carrying the field along, with Sandy Paul and Mastfer Strowan playing a waiting game. The solid pace told on the pacemakers in the last halfmile, and their jumping became erratic. '■Alby" Ward crept slowly up on Sandy Paul, and then like a flash came the top-weight. Master Strowan gained several length's at the second obstacle from home, putting in a magnificent jump, and then it was all over. Sandy Paul struggled on gamely and ran into second place, but no weight in the world would have stopped Mr. Easton's cham■pion that day. Bore's pace on the flat gained him third money, and Nita, Arlington, and Marton followed him home. Master Strowan is not going to Auckland, but Sandy iPaul will race at Ellerslie on the second day, prior to making a descent on the East Coast winter meetings. Bore strikes one as a horse that will come good with experience. A course like Trentham should suit him. Marton was knocked out by the hard race he had on the first day, but he was going well when he stumbled at the last brush fence. He will win a. fair 2J miles steeplechase before long. Diavolo was the disappointment of the race, being well settled at the end of a mile. Arlington jumps very big, but when he learns to skim his fences he should be dangerous. At the present he takes too much out of himself to get more than two miles. The Diver jumped well in places, but was outpaced. At stated above, Gang Awa' put it all over the very moderate opposition in the Rata Hack Hurdles, but he won well. The race for second money was a close affair between Waioture and Fionnuala, and Paul Moore finished next. Hupana, jumping wildly, led for a few furlongs, but the Advance mare has 110 stamina. Dingle was never in the firing line, and Quick Time wa9 last by a couple of furlongs. (There's nothing in a name!) Kauri King ran gamely in the May Hurdles, finishing strongly, and the big son of Soult should pay his way amongst the poor lot of hurdlers racing about the Auckland district. Colorado was a poor third, but he may do better later on when he strikes a drier track. Flying Gowrie had every chance of winning the Farewell Handicap, but her rider stuck to the rails in the straight, and he sprawled all over the place in the mud. McCarten brought Endure on the outside in the good going, and won nicely. Primato, who was paying a very tall price, ran into third place, which focusses attention on his engagement in the Maiden at Otaki.
