STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent) [All communicatioiia, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] Stratford, May 28. Mr. F. S. Pope, secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Mr. J. Brown, director of fields division, paid a visit of inspection to the Stratford Model Farm on Friday last. They were met by members of the committee, who showed them over the farm and explained the operations of the society. The weather was atrocious, but the visitors made a complete inspection, and expressed themselves as being greatly pleased with the objects and aims of the society, and the operations of the committee. The various manurial and variety tests were dilated upon, and elicited expressions of satisfaction, the mangel crop being particularly commended. There seems every prospect of a big house at the concert and dance to be held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening. A steady sale of tickets assures the success of the entertainment, and it is rarely indeed that performers come from as far afield as Palmerston and Wanganui. A lengthy programme has been drawn up, and should satisfy the most critical. Mr. C. A. Fox will act as accompanist, and will also supply the dance music, so patrons are assured there will be nothing wanting in this direction. Captains J. B. Hine, M.P., and Murray Urquhart are to be farew«lled at the Toko Hall on Friday evening. Messrs. W. H. Were (chairman) and Max Gernboefer (secretary) have the arrangements well in hand, so it is safe to anticipate that all Toko and the greater part of Stratford will be there to do honor to the gallant soldiers who are leaving once again to take up their duties as soldiers of the King. Mrs. Bianchi and Mr. S. Parker will supply the music for the dance, while several well-known Stratford performers are down for vocal items, etc.
Messrs. Newton and Swain, agents for North Taranaki for the Dayton Airless tyres, whose advertisement appears in another column, have been notified that for the time being there are no more of these tyres available, consequently further orders cannot be booked at present for this make of tyre. Considerable enthusiasm has been worked up in connection with the Stratford Card Club, and now a series of tournaments has been arranged that should ensure many pleasant evenings. At a meeting held recently the following delegates were present: Messrs. W. Morrison and J. Thomas (Ngaere), M. Knox and Tocker (Te Popo), Haylock (Cardiff), and J. Jones and R. H. Kivell (Stratford). Mr. J. Jones was elected president, Mr. Kivell secretary, and the captains of each team the executive committee. A shield is to be secured. The draw for play in the first round was: May 31, Ngaere v. Cardiff; June C, Cardiff v. Te Popo; June 7, Ngaere v. Stratford; June 14, Ngaere v. Te Popo. Teams to be from eight to ten men, and all matches to be played at Stratford.. The club has been challenged by the Druids' Order, while, for the third tim# in succession, the club has prevailed over the Carriers team, on the last occasion a margin of 3 points being in the club's favor. The long winter evenings are to hand. So those who find time tedious will be pleased to learn that Mr. C. E James has jußt opened up some fine winter pastimes—games that will instruct the child and interest the parent. Those who enjoy a good book can obtain gTe&t variety here, whilst if in search of a noliday, wedding, or christening gift, you will certainly find same amongst the many thousands of articles on sale at C. E. James's warehouse.—Advt.
