BADGES OF RANK.
TO BE WORN OX SHOULDERS. The Defence authorities have under consideration at present a proposal to subolish the emblem g of rank from the sleeves of officers' tunic,?, and ail order on the sulbject is to ho issued shortly. Rank will be issued by shoulder badges. The purpose of this change is to prevent the officer being made conspicuous in the field by the sleeve-marking's, which experience lias pro-red can be detected at a considerable distance. The new rule may not apply to existing uniforms, since an immediate change would involve either the officers or the Defence Department in considerable expense. There has been a suggestion that officers of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force may be required to wear tunics with closed collars, of the pattern worn by the men. At present this is optional, but experience at the front lias been that the open collar, with which collar Mid tie are worn, is "unhealthy" in the mtKtary sense. It helps the German sharpshooter to pick out the officers.
