Mr. Barnard, for the accused, drew the attention of the Bench to the fact that all the accused were married men with large* families and small means, which simply meant their families suffered if a heavy fine were imposed. His Worship: "It is a pity the money was not spent on their wives ana families in the first instance." Continuing, his Worship said: "After carefully considering the evidence and surround" ing circumstances I am satisfied that Harry Johnson, William Plowman, (Peter Norberg, and Thomas Corkery took part in the game, but I have some doubt ai to whether Patrick Morris or Richard Victory did so, and therefore shall giv» them the benefit of the doubt, and the information in their eases will bs dia> missed. Defendants William Plowman, Peter Norberg, and Thomas Corkery will each he convicted and fined in the sum of £2O, in default five weeks' imprisonment with hard labor. Defendant Join, son, who admits having been convicted of a similar offence, is now convicted and fined a sum of £25, in default six weeks' imprisonment with hard labor." Mr. Barnard asked for time and was allowed one month.
