TRAINING SYSTEM.

ADVANTAGES OF THE BATTALION SYSTEM.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

Wellington, May 17. One of the matters mentioned before the Defence Expenditure Commission was the advantage of the adoption of the battalion Bystem of organisation in the training camps. The comments of the chief Commissioner indicated that he believed the existing system ought to be altered. The chief advantage of the battalion system would be continuity of control and responsibility. Broadly speaking, the scheme would be this: The troops in a training camp would constitute a brigade, and each reinforcement would be regarded as a battalion. This battalion would have its Officers Commanding and a battalion staff, who would take the reinforcement right through its training. The responsibilities of the headquarters staff at the camp would be reduced, and the recruits would feel from the first that they were units in a definite military organisation. The rivalry between battalions would be an important factor in securing efficiency. At tho same time there would be important economies in administration.
