CLASS B RECRUITS.
PROPORTION OF FIT MEN. (From Our Own Correspondent) . Wellington, May 17. The proportion of fit men among the balloted reservists of class B is proving substantially better than early figures gave reason to expect. In fact Class B, up to the present time, has given a slightly better return than class A. The percentage of rejections among the married men is higher than among the single men, but the disparity is not very marked.
Returns already received by headquarters show that of the Class B men examined in the various districts about ■l7 per cent have been classed fit for camp, that is either fit A or CI. Bnt it should be remembered when considering this percentage that the appeal boards do their work after the medical examination. Experience has shown that the nett return, that is, the men who actually enter camp, is substantially lower than the percentage of medical passes, owing to exemptions and suspensions. The recruiting arrangements for the rest of this year hinge upon the supply of shipping, and it has not yet been decided finally how Class C shall be dealt with. Unless the supply of shipping improves substantially, Class C men will go into camp comparatively slowly.
