PROTECTION AGAINST FLOODS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, May 14. Mr.. Justice Hoßking's judgment in a civil action dealing with the right of property-holders to protect against floods follows the Appeal Court decision and affirms that land may be embanked . against floods, provided the river channel is not interfered with; that flood waters flowing promiscuously over the country are not to be treated as flowing in any channel for the purposes of this rule; and I. that for any injury done to other lands i by reasonable embankment for the purpose- of warding off such waters no dam- ! age cait be recorded by the sufferers. ; TWO. SOLDIERS. DIE ON VOYAGE. Auckland,, May 14. Two soldiers returning by a hospital ship died on the voyage. Private* C. i Thomas, of Tuatepere (Southland) died on April 18, and was buried at sea. Prif vate C.. T. McKlnley, of Balclutha, died j; on April 23, and was buried at an Amerij can port, American troops providing the ] firing party.
