WESTERN FRONT.

I THE GERMAN TASK. AUSTRALIANS' SUCCESS. Loudon, May 3. Eeuter's correspondent at British headquarters says that the Germans have not renewed their efforts to advance in Flanders or on the Somme, and their objective time-tables indicate that they are finding their task much heavier than they anticipated. The Australians carried out a successful minor operation at Villera Bretonneux, while the Canadians mopped up a strong post further north. The British rushed a machine-gun emplacement, clearing it out. A tremendous crescendo of gun-fire has broken out this morning, apparently in the Lys region.—Reuter. AMERICANS REPULSE HEAVY ATTACKS. Sir Douglas Haig reports: There was local fighting to our advantage on Thursday night in the neighborhood of Villprs Bretonneux. We made successful raids southward of Arras and eastward of St. Venant, capturing prisoners. There was reciprocal artillery activity during the night between Givenchy and Nieppe forest, in the neighborhood of Locre and southward of Ypres.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assoc, and Reuter. SLUMP IN HUN BOASTING BOOM. London, May 3. It is noteworthy that with the lull in the fighting since the German defeat all German talk of a "Kaiser's battle" has vanished. ARTILLERY AT WORK. London, May 3. i A tremendous artillery bombardment has broken out along the Lys front.— ( Aust.-N.Z. Cable Assoc.
