The Frankfurter Zeitung's Vienna correspondent states a big movement is developing among the German-speaking provinces of Austria favoring the .Seeding from Austro-Hungary and joining the federation of the German States.— Press Association. GERMAN POLICY IN UKRAINE. JIXCITJNG BITTER FEELINGS. £0 BREAD FROM UKRAINE. Received May 5, 5.5 p.m. Amsterdam, May 4. Arrests in the Ukraine have edited bitter feelings in Germany. The Socialise deputies intend interpellating the Hertling Government. In consequence of the criticisms the latter sent by wireless to General von Eichorn instructions to immediately release those arrested. It is stated that General von Eichorn and also Von Mumm. Ambassador at Moscow, will be summoned to Berlin to report exhaustively on the whole situation. The .entire Liberal press of Germany ha« joined the Socialists, and accuses 'he authorities of causing anti-German igitation in the Ukraine for its own •nds. The Vorwaerts says the methods employed have resulted in a great political disadvantage to Germany, who has not secured a single piece of bread from the Ukraine, whereas the whole of the German food programme was founded on the supposition of getting amnle Ukrainian grain.—Press Association. COUAPSE EXPECTED MOMENTARILY. Received May 5, 5.5 p.m. London, May 4. A* Daily News' Geneva correspondent cates that political and economic tension in Austria is intense. Fully a dozen crises confront the authorities. Representatives of the subjueated nationalities expect the inevitable collapse momentarily. Vienna correspondents state the unrest is widespread. April was the most critical month of the war period. Work was suspended on May Day, when there were twenty-two demonstrations in Vienna and fifty-eight in the provinces, at which peace and better conditions for labor were demanded. There were no serious disturbances.—Press Association.

Von Waldow, the Food Director, announced in the Reichstag that it was necessary to reduce the bread rations, and that unless the stipulated quantities are imported from Ukraine, the rations of meat and potatoes will most likely have to be lowered. The Socialist members expressed the opinion that the people would take the reduction badly. The food position in Bavaria is most •trious.—Press Association. ESTHONIA AND LIVONIA. MOTHER COUNTRY RAISING FOOD ALLOWANCES. POTATO AREA LARGELY INCREASED Received May 5, 5.5 p.m. London, May 4. The Press Bureau states that the large arrivals of American bacon and ham enable the food controller temporarily to raise the coupon values of bacon to eight ounces, and of ham to twelve ounces. The Food Controller hopes it will be possible to increase the butler and margarine rations before he lowers the bacon ration. The Food Controller estimates that the acreage under potatoes in the United Kingdom for 1018 is approximately 800,000 acres, which is 25 per cent, greater than in IMI7. —Aust. and N.Z. The Press Bureau states that Mr"Lloyd George and Lord Milner have returned from France, where they attended the meetings of the fifth session of the Supreme War Council. The appointment of Sir Gordon Nairne to the newly-created post of Comptroller of the Bank of England marks a striking departure from traditional policy.
