AN AUSTRIAN RAID. RESULTS IN A FIASCO. Received May 1, 5.5 p.m. Rome, April 30. Details are announced of a raid by sixty AustriaM, with the object of blowing up a submarine flotilla and sinking torpedo boats ui Ancona harbor. The sixty landed 17 miles from Ancona, heavily armed and carrying bombs and a supply of dynamite. The Austrian uniform so resembled the Italian that the coastguard saluted and allowed the men to pass. The party hid in a cottage in the daytime, while two disguised as peasants spiecj out the position of the vessels in port. At midnight the party, being mistaken for a naval patrol, passed through the town and reached the harbor, where they stabbed a sentry guarding the boat.3 and tried to seize the motor boats, but failed. Finally they took refuge in a sugar refinery and prepared to fight to the last. Meanwhile one of the party deserted and disclosed the presence of his companions. Ten carabineers went to the refinery. The Austrians, though armed to the teeth, surrendered ignominiously.

ALLIED NAVAL COUNCIL. ITS ADMIRATION OF BRITISH COOLNESS AND COURAGE. Received May 1, 9.25 pjn. London, May 1. The inter-Allied Naval Council expressed to the British navy their admiration of the coolness and reckless courage displayed during the attack on Ostend and Zeebrugge and the rapidity with which the objectives were achieved, despite the enormous difficulties and the desperate resistance of the enemy. The First Lord of the Admiralty acknowledges the navy's pride at receiving so gratifying a testimony from, tha naval representatives of their allies.
